Present and Future
The frescoes, owned by the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, have been on loan to the Menil Foundation since their rescue and purchase by the Foundation in 1984. Since that time, the Menil Foundation has been responsible stewards of these great works—restoring, preserving, and exhibiting the frescoes in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, a purpose-built home that honors the works’ original artistic and spiritual purpose. Since the Chapel’s opening in 1997, the frescoes have been on public display in Houston and will continue to be until the loan agreement expires in February 2012, after which time they will return to their home country of Cyprus.
There are many public programs planned to celebrate the frescoes’ time in Houston and their return to Cyprus. Please visit the News & Events page for more info.
